Homebuyer Education

Are you interested in buying a home but not sure where to start?

ESOP’s FREE HUD-approved homebuyer education class can teach you the important basics of the home buying process.  We will provide you with the knowledge you’ll need to secure an affordable mortgage and buy the right house for you.

The course will cover topics such as:

  • Homeownership Readiness
  • Budgeting and Credit Management
  • Financing
  • Accessing Affordable Mortgage Products
  • Accessing Downpayment Assistance
  • Shopping for a Home
  • Maintaining a Home

Homebuyer Education Classes are now offered virtually! The online course includes four sessions on consecutive days. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 6PM to 8PM.

Part I: Covers the responsibilities, advantages and disadvantages of homeownership. We discuss the importance of money management, setting realistic goals and establishing a spending plan, which is a necessary step to the dream of homeownership.

Part II: Explores the advantages and disadvantages of renting versus owning a home and the questions to ask to determine your readiness to buy home.

Part III: Explains credit reports: what they, how they are developed, how to read and why they are important. We will also discuss how to act on information found in the credit report to correct errors or improve information.

Part IV: Takes an inside look at the mortgage loan approval process, calculations, loan types and more. We explain the many key players, their roles and what to expect from their contribution in the home buying process from realtor, title agent, surveyor to list a few. Buying a home is a huge investment; and we'll discuss precautions to assist with the enjoyment of homeownership for years to come.

A one-on-one appointment is scheduled at the completion of both workshops with an ESOP Housing Counselor. The counselor will assess the client's mortgage readiness and set a plan of action to attain homeownership.
